Stand [01 Aug 2007|11:24pm]

Hi there,

In this community, there are young 'uns who are into art, writing, design, editing, or are just concerned with the plague of violence against women, especially young women, in the United States, where more than three out of four women will become a victim of sexual violence at some point in their lives. I thought I'd post two projects I'm pulling together related to VAW and the arts, since I could use all the help, energy, and creativity you have to offer to pull both off!

Let me introduce myself. I'm Elisabeth Wilhelm, a 20-year-old youth advocate, rabid feminist, and freelance writer, published over 120 times online and in print. I've put together youth newspapers as far away as Barcelona and Kuala Lumpur and am a columnist for Voice of Youth Advocates magazine. I've edited for Moondance.org, an award-winning women's ezine, interned for Girl Scouts of America (yes, you can giggle), and in my spare time, bellydance will cool chicas at Pratt, where I'm a writing major.

In support of November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a UNIFEM campaign, I'm launching two projects:

Literary Magazine, named Unlaced

A young women's e-lit mag dedicated to celebrating the power of the human spirit, particularly women who have done great things and those who will do g reat things. Special attention will be paid to publishing women-positive pieces, as well as combining statistics and factual information about VAW. The magazine will also include a toolkit, with an activist emphasis. We're open to publishing anyone under 25, male, female, or other.

Unlaced Writing Class

A girl-positive online writing workshop given to a group of fifteen young women co-taught by Elisabeth Wilhelm and a co-instructor, lasting four weeks and covering women's history, education on violence against women, and writing in a variety of forms and genres, culminating in a piece of writing to be published in the literary magazine.

But I can't pull this off by myself. Right now, I'm looking for writing class participants and lit magazine staff. We also have submission guidelines up! The website URL is http://unlaced.absynthemuse.com

Please pass it on to anyone you think might be interested. If you're interested or have questions, please post below or email me at elisabeth[at]sent[dot]com.

Thanks so much!

SOURGRAPES: We need feminists! [04 Feb 2007|08:39pm]

Hi there,
My name is Sam. I help run a zine called SOURGRAPES ZINE. We're a local zine based in Lexington KY. We focus on teaching kids about D.I.Y. ethics, being posi, and why its important to support local art and music.
I wanted to write not only to introduce our zine to the livejournal zine world! But also to explain our predicament. You see, after a lot of pulling out hair and craziness we've decided to hire on a full-time zine team. We used to be submission based but it was pretty hard on our (then) small team.
So now we're looking for like minded zinesters and punks who support self publication, D.I.Y. ethics, posi beliefs, and who are interested in having some fun creating a great zine and keeping the underground press alive!

We're looking for:

- Columnists
- Interviewers
- Record reviewer **
- Zine reviewers **
- D.I.Y. guide writers **
- Survival guide writers **
- Bike Repair guide writers **
- Cover artists (for upcoming covers)
- Photographers
- Cartoonists (full-time strip)
- Proof readers **
- Printers
- + more!

If you think you could help us out or would like to become apart of our team, we'd love to have you! Write us at SOURGRAPESZINE@GMAIL.COM or through our myspace: http://myspace.com/sourgrapeszine
Once again we are looking for FULL TIME writers/artists (which means we will be interested in your submissions for each issue) were poor and cant pay you but we can offer free ad space, zine copies, zine reviews, and whatever Sam can knit you!

Pro-Choice Potluck to Save South Dakota! [13 Sep 2006|09:00am]
[ mood | determined ]

A ragin' potluck for pro-choice activists! South Dakota has passed a ban that would outlaw abortion in almost all cases. Happily, there is hope. Concerned citizens in South Dakota will have the chance to overturn the abortion ban in the Novemeber elections. We need to do EVERYTHING we can to support them!

For a small donation, you can drop in anytime between 5pm-8pm. I will be collecting donations at the potluck that will go directly to the PPMNS Action Fund. I will also be providing buttons and stickers, literature, and serving up some hot info on the situation in South Dakota. We will also be screening several movies throughout the event.

Please come and bring a friend, relative, or colleague! Our home is open to everyone! Dress is casual and the atmosphere will be rockin'! Bring a dish to pass, a bottle of wine, a favorite snack food--whatever--and join in the fun! Spread the word!

Donate or RSVP online at http://standupsd.com/page/event/detail/jr9 or contact me directly at krich@pprsr.org or 716-673-5960.

Suggested MINIMUM donation for the potluck:
$5 - students/low income
$10 - teachers/professionals

Even if you can't afford a donation, come to learn about the South Dakota abortion ban and to have some fun! So whip up some brownies, grab a friend, and head on over to my place.

You can donate online or at the event. Thanks for your support! For more info and for persons w/ special needs, please contact me at krich@pprsr.org or 716-673-5960 to make arrangements.

ITS OURS, LET'S DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH IT! [08 Aug 2006|03:50pm]

Come to my blog, and tell us what you want for a world, instead of the shitty one we're passively saying 'oh shucks' about now!

IT'S OURS already - we can SAY how it will be and make it that way. Let's do so. NOW.

First we need to create a document (the list. -of the changes we will make to the current order of things)

So tell me - if the world was ours to make of it what WE WOULD - what would we want?

What would the world be like, if WE called the shots, and they happened?

Stop Fake Clinics from Providing Women with Deceptive Infomation [17 Jul 2006|02:31pm]

From the NOW Action List

Action Needed:

"Pregnant? Scared? We Can Help." So claim billboards popping up around the country advertising the services of local "Crisis Pregnancy Centers" (CPCs). While these so-called clinics claim to offer help for women facing unplanned pregnancies, they are in fact run by anti-abortion organizations with the aim of preventing women from obtaining abortions. These fake clinics use deceptive methods to get women in the door and then bombard them with misleading information. To address this problem, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) has introduced the Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Services Act (H.R. 5052) which would enforce truth-in-advertising standards for reproductive centers. Please urge your representative to support this legislation. It is imperative that women are provided with accurate medical information.

apparently, im nothing more than a uterus. the fact that i am, in myself, a living breathing member of this species doesnt really factor in.

Obstacles to preconception care include getting insurance companies to pay for visits and putting the concept into regular use by doctors and patients. Experts acknowledge that women with no plans to get pregnant in the near future may resist preconception care.
"We know that women -- unless you're actively planning [a pregnancy], . . . she doesn't want to talk about it," Biermann said. So clinicians must find a "way to do this and not scare women," by promoting preconception care as part of standard women's health care, she said.

isnt that... tricking them...?

feel free to scream. i sure did.

and remember Livejournal isn't enough! believe it or not everyone isn't on livejournal (haha!), here are some ideas of where you can get this message out:

-forward it to yr email lists... including activist groups, campus feminist & queer groups, personal friends and family members, people who you know are in the pro choice movement and can give time or money.
- bring it up at yr meetings you go to. fundraisers are being organized all over the country as we speak to send money to Jackson! every little bit helps!

- going to a conference? summer is the season for good conferences! bring this up guerilla workshop style: brainstorm and talk amongst interested people and come up with a plan of what you can do.
- CALL people who you know might be interested in this, doesn't matter how far they are from you, we need EVERYONE'S HELP!

just remember that abortion becoming illegal WILL BE a domino effect. and the south will GO! lets show these assholes that we mean business and we aren't going to let this happen!

Love, Lindsey Oliver
Southern Abortion Fund

Hello Friends and Allies,

Operation Save America (formerly Operation Rescue) has put out a call for a siege on the last abortion-providing clinic in Jackson, Mississippi this summer. (See http://jackson.operationsaveamerica.org/indexVideo.asp for more information on their plans.) Their message is being spread far and wide and we are planning a massive clinic defense demonstration to keep the clinic open. July 15-22, 2006 is the proposed siege week.
In order to sustain a weeks worth of clinic defense we are in need of a variety of support and especially people to participate in the counter-action. Currently, members of abortion funds across the south are planning for a caravan to Jackson and we need your help! If you are interested in participating in the caravan or would like to become a fiscal sponsor, please contact us as soon as possible!
Also, we are in desperate need of items like water bottles and food for the persons who will be convening in Jackson as well as housing opportunities for the activists. We are also raising money to raise awareness with buttons, stickers, t-shirts, and other items. Any letters to the editor that you send regarding this event would be helpful or any other publicity for that matter. We are hoping for a big turn out to let the rest of the south know that we are in this together. For more information or to find out how to donate contact the Southern Abortion Fund at southernabfund@nnaf.org or the Jackson area NOW chapter at jxnms_now@yahoo.com.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Sound the Alarm: Fake "Clinic" Cons 17-Year-Old Girl [24 Apr 2006|11:53pm]

An Indiana mother recently accompanied her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend to one of Indiana's Planned Parenthood clinics, but they unwittingly walked into a so-called "crisis pregnancy center" run by an anti-abortion group, one that shared a parking lot with the real Planned Parenthood clinic and was designed expressly to lure Planned Parenthood patients and deceive them.

The group took down the girl's confidential personal information and told her to come back for her appointment, which they said would be in their "other office" (the real Planned Parenthood office nearby). When she arrived for her appointment, not only did the Planned Parenthood staff have no record of her, but the police were there. The "crisis pregnancy center" had called them, claiming that a minor was being forced to have an abortion against her will.

The "crisis pregnancy center" staff then proceeded to wage a campaign of intimidation and harassment over the following days, showing up at the girl's home and calling her father's workplace. Our clinic director reports that the girl was "scared to death to leave her house." They even went to her school and urged classmates to pressure her not to have an abortion.

The anti-choice movement is setting up these "crisis pregnancy centers" across the country. Some of them have neutral-sounding names and run ads that falsely promise the full range of reproductive health services, but they dispense anti-choice propaganda and intimidation instead. And according to a recent article in The New York Times, there are currently more of these centers in the U.S. than there are actual abortion providers. What's more, these centers have received $60 million in government grants. They're being funded by our tax dollars.

A bill has just been introduced in Congress to stop the fraudulent practices of fake clinics, but it desperately needs more support. Tell your representative to take a stand: anti-choice extremists must not get away with this any longer!

BJ for a Ferrari and a condo! Step right up! [21 Mar 2006|07:26pm]

I heard this issue being discussed on the radio this morning, and rather than irritate my friends with yet another post about feminism (one they'd likely pass over out of boredom, resulting in few responses anyway), I figured I'd post here for once.

So here's the situation: apparently there's been a rash of questionably-legal postings on Craigslist which involve men looking for women who will live with them "rent-free" if she performs some agreed-upon chores for him. And yes, they're chores of the sexual variety, which is where the illegal nature of this comes in.

Now, I'm not one to put restrictions on anyone's sexuality, or what they do with their body. If consenting adults want to enter into a sexual relationship purely as a business transaction, I think they should have every right to do so.

BUT. I also wonder if the head of NOW, who issued a statement (which naturally, I can't find) about this being a practice which contributes to the perpetuation of institutionalized inequalities, is right. Does this, in fact, harm the progress of gender equality? I know that personally, I would never agree to such an arrangement- not because I think it's morally corrupt, simply because I enjoy supporting myself and the independence afforded therein. That is my brand of feminism.

However, should it be considered wrong by feminist standards for girls to engage in these transactions? Where does the feminism come into play: the furthering of womens' independence at all costs, or the freedom for women to do what they want- even when it serves to reinforce inequalities? IS it unequal, or is sex as a commodity just as valuable as the material possessions these men are offering?

In sum: are women who trade sex for a good lifestyle essentially dismantling everything Ms. Friedan and crew fought for, by way of subjugating themselves and becoming reliant on a man...or are they simply opportunists who know a good thing when they see it?

Get Ready [02 Feb 2006|04:35pm]

“Most commonly, they ingest a whole bottle of quinine pills, with castor oil...we try to get them to the ER before their cardiac rhythm is interrupted...Sometimes they douche with very caustic products like bleach. We had a patient, a teen, who burned herself so badly with bleach that we couldn’t even examine her, her vaginal tissue was so painful....”

“Our local hospital tells me they see 12-20 patients per year, who have already self-induced or had illegal abortions. Some make it, some don’t. They are underage or poor women mostly, and a few daughters of pro-life families...”

So much exciting news [02 Dec 2005|11:06am]

We've had a lot of amazing things happen for us at Heroine Films this month. A lot of it do to support from this community and others. We've gathered support from a lot of different places but honestly, Livejournal has shown us the most amazing people.

So as for what's up: We have finally posted the interview that we did on the NC television show Second Cinema.  You can watch it in at www.heroinefilms.net/scinterview.html

There is an article coming out about us in this months upcoming issue of CURVE Magazine. I believe it comes out on the 15th if you'd like to check it out. Also, MTV's new LGBTQ channel LOGO has put together a package for us for advertising purposes (we'll be showing our trailer to the over 13 million homes LOGO already goes to) and they are interested in buying the finished film. As I said in the last update, we also got a large portion of our funding from the production company AMVF.

Thank you so much to all of those who have supported us. It is all your continued letters, emails, comments, and donations that has made this possible. There is no way we can express how much it means to us.

newbee with a heathen question... [01 Dec 2005|10:52am]

[ mood | Why would a woman be X-ian? ]

that I've always wanted to ask, and on-line seems the perfect place to do it, so I can't be beaten to death...

Does it seem like the entire Christian faith is founded on opressing women to anyone by me?

The old testament starts with a woman committing the first sin and then using her sexuality to tempt man into sinning as well. Also her name was eve, as in Evil? Ok, that argument is pretty common, but I've never heard this one...except in my head--

The new testament (jesus's life) begins with Mary getting raped. I quote from the new internation translation of the bible (luke 1:31-1:35)

"31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." 34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" 35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."

I suppose that an argument could be made that she was forewarned, but it doesn't sound to me that Mary was asked, or that she consented. I mean if my neighbor came up to me and said, "my friend is going to sneak into your house tomorrow night and have his way with you." and I replied, "how's he going to do that? My house is locked." And that's the end of the convo, is it still not rape?? The answer is yes. In fact, the language used is even talking about god over powering her, and overshadowing her.

Let me know what you think. I'm going to x-post in the atheist community.

In a bad economy, women suffer most [08 Nov 2005|09:14am]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Unbelievable. For people not "members" of the Tribune and cannot view the article, the gist of it is that women's jobs have been slower to recover.

Couple this with me listening to Focus on the Family last night where some airy woman was expounding on the virtues of being a SAHM, and doing "What god had made her for," and I'm annoyed.

Seriously. Dobson even went so far as to say, "How do you respond to those women who feel they have to work for whatever reason?"

If there was any group more out of touch with reality, it's Focus.
